Anchor

The Anchor Background represents ordinary mortals whose banality represents a stabilising force in the character’s life and reduces the character’s Bedlam. Anchors are typically family members, spouses or old friends, but they could be a boss, a neighbour or even a pet. The point about them is that they are non-threatening and humdrum but time-consuming. Anchors can not be Dreamers, Allies, Contacts or Retinue: the whole point is that they are ordinary and offer no benefit in adventures. If characters insist on Enchanting an Anchor on more than the rarest of occasions, the Storyteller may rule that the Anchor is lost (and replaced by another dot in Retinue, Dreamers or Allies).

The Anchor’s rating is added to the amount of Bedlam a character can remove between Stories. During a Story, a character can visit an Anchor to try to remove Bedlam. By spending a Scene together, the player can roll the Anchor Background (difficulty 6) and removes one point of Bedlam per success. A botch creates points of Temporary Banality.
