Morgause is one of the three Cerneu Sisters, along with Queen Morgan La Fey and Elaine of Garlot. She is the estranged wife of King Lot of Orkady and the mother of Sir Gawaine, Sir Agravaine, Sir Gareth and Sir Gaheris. She is said to have been the mother of the Mordred, though she denies this.

Morgause is a longtime rival and occasional ally of her sister Morgan. She seems to lack Morgan’s ambition and focus, being more given over to her own pleasure and debauchery. Nonetheless, she is an accomplished seductress and political manipulator. Her son Agravaine remains devoted to her, but her other sons have learned to stay out of her plots and schemes.

As Annie Belisant, Morgause is a wealthy and reasonably famous London businesswoman who owns a successful chain of lap-dance clubs and sex shops appealing to high-end customers. She maintains a less-publicised business in high-class brothels catering to customers with unusual tastes. It’s rumoured she likes to work the business personally.

In Dreaming Bedegraine, Morgause is one of the warlords. She leads a coven of cannibal-hags called the Bean-Nighe, a mixture of chimerical witches and transformed enchanted humans. The Bean-Nigh dress in blood-soaked rags, wear clawed gloves and hideous hag-masks and are Morgause’s eyes, ears and swift retribution in the Dreaming.

In Welcome to Troll-Thing Morgause sleeps with Dodinel the Savage. She learns something about Thora Drake but in Stop The Wyvern her messenger sent to her sister Morgan is intercepted.

In Mother Dearest it is revealed that Morgause has been using the Book of Shadow, given to her by her sister Queen Morgan La Fey, to attack Enid the Silent and Thora Drake. Morgause has the opportunity to use her Arts on Thora and learns much about her but not, or at least not conclusively, her true identity.

In Welcome To The Machine Morgause visits the seer Sigurth to have her clues about Thora solved. It appears that, in The Getaway, she shares this information with her Bean-Nighe and manipulates the werewolf Sherwood Shaftesbury into rescuing Gawaine and Thora.
